Sunday Sermon Review
I haven't done a Sunday sermon review here on my blog for sometime. I just haven't felt that it was what I should do but this time is different. We had a former Pastor come share a message with us and this time I felt the sermon at my home church was encouraging and helpful and so I want to share my notes with you here today. The sermon is based on Colossians 1:24 - 2:6 which you can see at the bottom of this post. I like to take notes as the preacher presents his message so here is what I jotted down:
1) Suffer joyfully for the Gospel
Colossians 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:
- suffering is a part of discipleship
- the pressures of life cause suffering
- Christians are recognized by suffering
- suffering produces faith and character
2) Serve according to your calling
Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
- make the word of God known
-all our time and treasure and talents are the Lord's
- are you serving according to your calling?
3) Move people to maturity
Colossians 1:28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
- focus on Christ, not on yourself,
-admonish and warning - help to set people to proper order,
-teaching - look for opportunities to teach ad to be taught,
-include both warning and teaching,
-perfect means to be full grown and mature
4) Work wholeheartedly with His energy
Colossians 1:29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.
-share Jesus with everyone
-we are called to give everything for Christ
-God gives us strength and the words to say
5) Enrich the lives of others
Colossians 2:2,3 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
- be encouraged in your heart
-a discouraged person has lost courage
-we can come along side and encourage one another
-be united in love
6) Delight in obedience
Colossians 2: 4-6
And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ. As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
- God calls us to be obedient to Him, His Word the Bible
-false teachers try to entice us with fine sounding words
- do your part, stand together
-stand up for truth and righteousness
Colossians 1: 24- 2:6
24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily. Chapter 2
For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
