What do you want?...Sunday sermon review

Sunday November 18, 2012
( from my home church I attend regulary )
Topic: What do you want?
Text: Matthew 20: 29-35

The service began with the singing of several songs, new songs that I am not familiar with but also including a favorite of mine " There is Power in the Blood"
There was a promotion video for the Grey Cup Football game next Sunday and our church is encouraging people to attend a church party at the youth center. ( Note from me personally - I really do not agree with our church promoting this kind of stuff in church. I would much rather encourage everyone to focus on the soon return of the Lord Jesus and that we prepare our hearts to be ready to meet Him. The Bible says in Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.)

This was followed by the reading of Psalm 72.
The children's feature was really good and a blessing to all the little ones. They did an impromtu skit of from Matthew 20: 29-35. The adult who was leading this involved all the children and it was great to see the story become real to the children.

Matthew 20: 29-34 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. 30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. 31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. 32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? 33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. 34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

Pastor Ben came up to preach and here is some of what he said.
Imagine what it would be like to have Jesus ask you - "What do you want?" -that is from verse 32 What will ye that I shall do unto you?
Try to imagine what it will have felt like for these two blind men.
The blind men likely had family in town, they had each other, they may have thought that with Jesus coming by, this could mean they would get more money. They called out for help and for pity.

Has Jesus asked you this question - "what do you want from Me?
What is it that you are hoping God will do for you? - maybe you would like to win the lottery - why is that? what is it that you actually desire and want in life? - what excites you? - what keeps you up at night?

We have Objections
Do we really believe that Jesus wants to listen to us?
Don't we more often ask - What is God's passion for us? We want what God wants.
God will tell us what we are searching for if only we ask Him to reveal it to us. God will help us realize what it is we need.

1) Hear God's heart
2) God reveals to us what we truly want
3) Tell God what your heart truly longs for.

Are we afraid to be honest with God and tell Him what is on our heart?
We are afraid because we aren't sure how we will handle things if God denies our wants.
We need to be vulnerable with God
We want the very best for our children - God is our Father and He wants the best for us.
Many of us have experienced disappointment with God. So we play it safe and do not tell Him our deepest wants.
Our fear is rooted in our understanding of God or lack thereof.
God has compassion on us.
He does really care about us.
We need to believe that Jesus is really God.
We may not get what we ask for but God does want to hear from us.
Sometimes we do not ask for wise things. God knows the end from the beginning and He knows what it is that is best for us.

Are you going to keep playing it safe or are you going tell God everything that is in your heart?
